In the Sunday, July 27 Houston Chronicle, Kelsey-Seybold Clinic's Chief of Family Medicine and Medical Director for Care Coordination and Quality Improvement Patrick Carter, M.D., was interviewed about Kelsey-Seybold's "no drug reps" policy. Reporter Lora Hines focused on the impact drug reps have on influencing prescriptions. Dr. Carter comments on research that indicates that "direct pharmaceutical interactions with doctors led to higher prescribing frequency and higher costs."

Taking steps to reduce risk of diabetes
In the Sunday, July 27 Houston Chronicle Health Zone section, Kelsey-Seybold Clinic's Chief of Family Medicine and Medical Director for Care Coordination and Quality Improvement Patrick Carter, M.D., was asked how he would handle the question of whether a patient without a family history of diabetes would be tested. He said, "If an adult sees me and is overweight, I at least get a fasting blood-sugar level. If there are chronic illnesses, such as high blood pressure or high cholesterol, I do additional testing because the three — including diabetes — happen together even without a family history."
